Every Day: Commit to Consistency:
This part of the EDGE formula requires a decision– that no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you’re committed to presenting yourself in a certain way. This is how you’ll maintain the edge you’ve created in your business. When you maintain your edge, you’re able to make a significant change to your sales pipeline instead of just landing a one-time sale.
It’s about deciding that not only will you look and feel great when you walk into a big meeting, but that you will also look and feel great when you walk into the gym. Instead of wearing the baggy gym shorts and a t-shirt with a hole that you’ve had for years, you choose sportswear that continues to give you both a mental and business edge. Just to be clear, that means still wearing a t-shirt and gym shorts, but they are strategic, intentionally chosen ones.
There is a challenge to this piece of the puzzle that I’ll guide you through. I’ve analyzed a lot of wardrobes over the years and there’s always a common problem. When it comes to clothing, people buy what they like to buy, not necessarily what they need or what will change their result.
Just yesterday, I was in the closet of a high-level executive who loves to go hunting. He loves to buy hunting jackets and hunting pants, and he has a ton of them. The trouble is, he only goes hunting a few times a year. So when it comes to everyday activities like going to dinner with his wife, he has nothing to wear.
His shopping habits were actually acting against his decision to consistently look and feel great each day. He couldn’t maintain his edge because he didn’t have what he needed in order to do that in all the sectors of his life.
Let me give you a personal example. I love high heels. I like the way they look, and, most of all, I like the way I feel in them. Specifically they make me feel glamorous, sexy, and fun. Yet 90% of my life doesn’t make wearing high heels realistic. But it’s really easy for me to buy them until I realize they aren’t actually going to help me create the image I want with everyday consistency. Yes, I wear high heels. But for those occasions when I know I can’t wear high heels, I have to figure out an alternative that is consistent with both my overall image and how high heels make me feel. I simply channel how I feel in high heels (glamorous, sexy, and fun) and find a similar solution that gives me the same mental edge, whether that’s a fun flat or a sexy wedge.
